December 1, 2023

HURFOM: On November 26, 2023, junta’s troops and members of “Pyu Saw Htee ” a network of pro-junta and pro-military villagers,  arrested roughly 30 migrant workers in Dawei City, Tenasserim Division. Then, they robbed a monastery and seized gold and money.

About 30 troops and members of “Pyu Saw Htee” fired their guns and entered Saw Mi Nyo Street, Bone Maw Ward. They occupied a migrant-worker barracks at the “Custom Port” and arrested approximately 30 workers.

They then robbed the “Saw Mi Nyo Monastery” and seized about 734.4 g of gold and hundreds of millions of Myanmar kyat.

There have been frequent military operations in our village so it isn’t okay to stay there. So we’ve moved to Dawei. We’re still building our house. We’ve requested the Abbot keep our money. Now, we’ve lost all of the money,” said a resident.

Those arrested are migrant workers who came to Dawei for work.  No one is aware of any cause for their arrest.

It looked like they were robbing a house,  as they shouted and entered. They forced everyone out of the house. Adults and children had to lay down on the ground,” said a witness who experienced the event.

Ever since the attempted coup, junta’s troops and members of “Pyu Saw Htee” have frequently arrested, threatened and extorted money from Dawei City residents.
