Party registration process stalled but MUP officials are still optimistic

HURFOM: The Mon Unity Party (MUP) re-applied for registration under military junta’s electoral law on March 15, 2023 but there has been no progress after nearly eight months. Despite the long delay, the party’s high ranking officials are still optimistic.
“The CEOs said the election commission or the military junta must approve the registration of the MUP. They’re confident that the junta can’t exclude the Mon party from their election. That’s why they’ve decided not to attempt more” said the Central Executive Committee.
Due to the new electoral law approved by the military junta, the MUP decided to downgrade from a “Union Level” (national level) political party to a “State Level” political party. The MUP organized a CEC meeting in their headquarters in Mawlamyine on February 11, 2023 and made that decision.
Then, they applied for the new state level registration on March 15, 2023 but there has been no progress, after nearly eight months.
“If they(the junta) dare to hold an election without the Mon party, let them do so. Many will criticize the election without a Mon party. To approve the registration or not to approve is their duty. We won’t do anything more than what we have done so far,” continued the CEC.
The MUP competed in the 2020 general election as a “Union Level” political party and they had party offices in 17 townships in Rangoon, Pegu, Tenasserim, Mon and Karen region.
