HURFOM: On October 4, 2023, the military base in Kyauk Ni Maw village, Long Lone Township, Dawei District, Tenasserim Division was attacked. In response, the military junta deployed around 100 troops via a sea route to reinforce their base.
The arrival of the military led to more than 1,000 villagers from three surrounding villages having to flee their homes.
“There are 1,150 villagers according to the list. Some villagers have hidden in their plantation. They haven’t been included in the list,” said a social worker who helps internally displaced persons.
Since August 2023, the military junta has frequently reinforced their troop presence and launched military operations in Kyauk Ni Maw, Nyaung Pyin, Out Kyauk Watt and Ah Pyin Kyauk Watt villages.
“Residents from three villages have had to run away very frequently. Now, the military junta has retreated and some villagers have returned home. But some are still afraid of potential armed clashes and dare not go back,” said a local source.
