Two residents arrested for defaming junta’s leader on social media

HURFOM: In the first week of October, 2023, the military junta arrested two local residents from Bilin and Paung Township, Mon State, after accusing them of defaming the junta’s leader on social media.
On October 2, the military junta raided the house of Ko Min Myat Tun Aung in Ah Lu village, Bilin Township and arrested him. The junta accused him of using the “Min Tun Myat Aung” Facebook account to defame the junta’s leader on social media.
On October 3, Ma Aye Ni Ni Aung from Kywe Chan village, Paung Township was arrested by the junta at night. The junta claims that she is the owner of the “Aye Ni Ni Aung” Facebook account and had defamed the junta’s leader on social media.
“As far as I know, the junta is monitoring those who used to participate in protests and those who are active in the pro-democracy movement. Both were arrested for defaming the “Ma Ah La” (junta’s leader) on social media,” said a source close to the junta.
The individuals are being detained in the Paung City and the Bilin City Police Station respectively. They are facing charges under sections 52 and 52(a) of the Anti-Terrorist Act and charges under section 505(a) of the Burmese Criminal Act.
In the last week of September, the junta also arrested an owner and two staff from the “Kyaw Kyaw Kyar” mobile phone store in Thanbyuzayat Town, Mon State. All three were charged with sharing the activities of the National Unity Government (NUG) and the People’s Defense Forces (PDF) on social media.
