Closure of the Za Well Gate causes rice shortage and high commodity price

HURFOM: In September, 2023, the military junta banned local people from passing through Za Well Gate which is located at a triple junction in Tenasserim Township, Tenasserim Division. As a result, villages are now faced with rice shortages and a sudden and sharp increase in commodity prices.
“On September 25, there was no rice in Ta Ku village tract. Nearby villagers have to buy and eat dry noodles,” said a resident from Ta Ku village track.
Due to the closure of Za Well Gate, Ta Ku, Thar Ra Twin, Tane Naw and Kaw Ma Pyin villages are also faced with rice shortage and suddenly high commodity prices.
“They haven’t even allowed motorcycles to pass at the gate. Now they’re using tanks filled with stones and sand to block the road,” said a resident.
As transportation routes have been blocked, local people have to pay up to 150,000 MMK for a bag of low-quality rice.
