Junta’s authorities ban Mon Revolution Day

September 6, 2023

HURFOM: August 31, 2023, is the Full moon Day of War Gaung month in the Burmese/Mon calendar, and it marks the 76th Mon Revolution Day.

However,  Paung and Chaung Zone Township authorities banned any celebration of the 76th Mon Revolution Day.

We didn’t want to experience any inconvenience so we’d filed a written report for permission. We thought we were allowed to celebrate the event. But the authority replied the event wasn’t allowed,” said a member of Paung Township Mon Revolution Day Organizing Committee.

The Paung Township Mon Revolution Day Organizing Committee had submitted a proposal on August 30, a day before the event,  but the township authority denied their request.

Similarly, the Mon State and Chaung Zone administrative bodies banned commemoration of Mon Revolution Day in Chaung Zone Township. The township authority went as far as  summoning the organizing committee members and forced them to sign that they wouldn’t organize the event.

About 50 members of the police forces blocked the proposed venue with barbed wire. After some negotiation with the Mon State Chief Minister, the police removed the barbed wire.

Critics note that the Mon Unity Party has cooperated with the military council at both the state and union levels, and despite this cooperation, the junta’s administrative bodies insist on creating inconveniences, such as this incident in Mon affairs.
