Mon State has 600 dengue fever patients: Two die of the disease

July 18, 2023

HURFOM: From January to June, 2023, the Mon State Health Department reported approximately 600 cases of dengue fever. Two individuals have died of the disease.

The majority of patients are from  Mawlamyine, Paung, Thanbyuzayat, Kyikemayaw and Ye Townships.  The cases include  children in the 5 to 9  age range.

Now, it is time to provide intensive care to children to prevent dengue fever. But they have to go to school and we’ve worried that they’ll become  infected with the disease from transmission at schools. We’ve seen no preventive measures at school,” said one parent from Ye Township.

The military regime is responsible for health education and preventive measures, and  residents believe this is why there are many cases of dengue fever patients at clinics and hospitals.

The military regime has done nothing to prevent dengue fever. Before, the village health chief and staff were doing mosquito control in the villages. They had put “abate” larvicides/insecticides in the pool/well. The people also made a contribution. But we have no preventive measures now,” said a Ye resident.

In addition to dengue fever, children across Burma have been suffering from a bronchitis disease which is being transmitted by a new virus.
