Junta arrests Chair of Paung Township People’s Party

HURFOM: On June 27, 2023, police working on behalf of the military junta arrested U Win Nyunt, the Chair of Paung Township People’s Party, at his home in Kywe Chan village, Paung Township, Mon State, local sources reported to HURFOM.
The sources confirmed he was arrested, accused of sharing activities of the National Unity Government and the People’s Defense Forces via articles from local news agencies that criticized the military junta on his social media account.
“Since the coup, he has closely cooperated with the military commander and done business with them. He’s notorious in Paung. Everyone is surprised to hear of his arrest,” said a Paung resident.
U Win Nyunt has been charged under Section 52(a) of the Anti-Terrorist
Act which can include a three-year imprisonment and fine.
The People’s Party has accepted the new electoral law of the junta, and decided to apply for a new registration as a political party.
