Junta arrests two residents in Paung Township under Anti-Terrorism charges

HURFOM: On June 2st and 22nd, 2023, in two separate incidents the military junta arrested a man and a woman from Paung Township, Mon State.

At 10 am on June 21, 2023, the junta’s security forces stopped and interrogated travelers on the Yangon – Mawlamyine Highway Road. One of those they stopped, Saw Yan Aung from Ka Don Si Ward, Paung Town allegedly had shared activities of the National Unity Government and the People’s Defense Forces on his social media account via his mobile phone. He was arrested.

At 6 am on June 22, 2023, the junta arrested Ma Yune Phyu Phyu Khine from Ka Toon village, Paung Township accusing her of being involved in “Flower Strike”. She was arrested at her home.

“She was usually involved in the protests before. So the military junta had been closely monitoring her. On the birthday of Daw Aung San Su Kyi (June 19), Ma Yune Phyu Phyu had shared an old post about the “Flower Strike” on her social media. She was arrested by the junta,” said a villager from Ka Toon village.

Both Saw Yan Aung, and Ma Yune Phyu Khine are being charged under the Anti-Terrorist Act.
