At 3:13 pm on June 16, 2023, the 31st local military battalion launched indiscriminate artillery attacks on Kyouk Eye (Win Ta Maw) village, Khaw Zar Sub-township, Southern Ye Township, Mon State and killed a local woman.
40-year-old Daw Htwe Kyi was cooking in her kitchen when she was hit by an artillery shell. She died on the scene and her funeral was held the same day, according to a local source.
On June 18, Lieutenant Zaw Myo Aung from the 31st Battalion LIB#31 visited the victim’s household and provided monetary compensation of 200,000 Kyat.
“The Captain/Lieutenant said the money was for Daw Htwe Kyi’s funeral. He forcefully gave the money so that the family had no alternative but to accept it,” said a villager.
After declaring martial law in Ye Township, the military junta has been launching indiscriminate artillery attacks, destroying houses and killing local people. This is the first time the military has paid monetary compensation to the family members of a victim.
