Drop out rate increases due to high tuition fees in Mon State

HURFOM: High tuition fees, and other school associated costs including basic commodities which have been on the rise have led some students to drop out of school due to financial hardship.
Tuition, dormitory fees, food and other associated costs for a single academic year, cost between three to six million Kyat. Some parents are unable to pay for these costs for their children.
“We spent two million Kyat last year, and this year it will cost at least three million Kyat in part because commodity prices are high. If you want your child to stay at a popular dormitory, you’ll pay about five or six million Kyat. We’ve tried very hard but we can’t afford the fee. I’m very sad to have to stop my child’s education,” said a parent from Thanbyuzayat Township.
If a high school student does not stay at a private dormitory and just attends government school from home, the cost will be between one and two million per an academic year.
Parents with school age children are facing great financial hardship.
“Students’ parents are in trouble this academic year. A lot of them have come to us but we can support only three students in a single academic year,” said an official from “Sponsor a Child’s Education in Mon Area, Burma”.
Due to the high costs associated with government schools, some parents of Mon high school students have decided to move their children to the Mon National High School located in Win Kabar village.
Even the cost at the Mon National High School is getting higher. An academic year for a middle-school student costs about 700,000 Kyat, and for a high school student it will cost about 800,000 Kyat.
