Gas stations in Mon State stop sales of gasoline due supply shortages
March 29, 2023
HURFOM: Gas stations in Mon State have not been able to secure an adequate quota of gasoline for their operations. Because buying gasoline from the black market is too costly, some gas stations have decided to stop selling gasoline.
“I don’t know how the MPTA (Myanmar Petroleum Trade Association) manages (the distribution of gasoline). We don’t have enough attainment quota so there is not enough gasoline for sale. It is very expensive to get gasoline from the outside (black) market. It isn’t profitable to do so. That’s why most small gasoline stations have opted to stop their sales operations,” said a gas station owner.
In addition, gasoline tankers have to wait for a long time to get permission to pass the Nyaung Khar Shay Gate on the Rangon – Mawlamyine Highway Road. These long delays have also impacted the supply of gasoline deliveries.
“I had to spend two days and two nights just trying to pass through the Nyaung Khar Shay Gate, and during that time the gasoline supply ran out,” continued the owner.
The military junta has also reduced gasoline imports. The Vice Chair of the military council urged that there be a reduction in the use of gasoline at a financial meeting on March 9, 2023.
These decisions are dramatically impacting the lives of the people of Myanmar. With the arrival of a long festive period known as Songkran, people would normally prepare to travel within the country. However, there is a growing worry that gasoline supplies will run out and the price will be unreasonably high.
