Situation around Jone Doe more stable, but villagers still afraid

HURFOM: An armed clash took place between the Burmese army and the joint forces of the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and the People’s Defense Force (PDF) from January 22 to 26, 2023.
Heavy fighting took place around Kan Ne village near Jone Doe Town, Kaw Ka Rate Township, in Karen State.
More than 26 houses were burnt down and roughly 10,000 villagers had to flee.
“The situation is getting stable now, so some villagers are returning to their homes. But some dare not go back. They are still staying at their relatives’ houses or monasteries,” said one villager.
The military junta launched both artillery and air attacks. There are concerns there might be artillery shells which did not explode, and villagers should check their places carefully and thoroughly before their return, advised a villager who is helping to clean up the battle ground.
“There is currently no military movement but I’ve advised villagers to be cautious with their return,” said the volunteer.
Those who fled want to return as soon as possible, but are also afraid of further possible armed clashes.
