September 5, 2025

HURFOM: On August 28th, 2025, a 21-year-old male from Taung Pauk village, Kyarinnseikyi Township, Karen State was arrested and beaten by the members of the New Mon State Party (AD – Anti Military Dictatorship) after being accused of abusing substances.

Min Ja Rai Nyan was spraying insecticide at his plantation in the village at 11 am when four members of the NMSP (AD) reached his residence. Then, they accused him of abusing substances.

While spraying insecticide in his plantation, the members of the NMSP (AD) reached and said nothing but handcuffed him. A man called Nai Ohm Gyi ordered two members to beat him. Another member pointed a gun at him,” said a local source.

The NMSP (AD) dragged him to the Township Office in Taung Pauk village, Mawlamyine District to have a urine test for illicit drug use.

They did urine tests three times. All the tests showed negative. But Nai Ohm Gyi said, “I don’t trust the tests. I’m sure he’s abusing substances.” But as every test showed negative, he finally said the test machine was broken,” continued the source.

The young man was released in the evening of September 2nd.  He has sustained severe injuries to his back and is receiving medical treatment at home.

HURFOM was informed that his family had reported the abuses to departments of the NMSP (AD) via the village Administrator.

(The abusers) said they would pay for the treatment cost. I denied their offer. I don’t want any recurrence like my son was beaten without any proper questioning and investigation,” said the mother of the young man.

According to the statement of the New Mon State Party (Anti-Military Dictatorship) released on September 4th on their social media, Nai Ong Kyi, who ordered the beating, was sentenced to six months in prison and permanently dissolved from the New Mon State Party (Anti-Military Dictatorship). And Min Kya Rai Nyan, the person who was beaten, is to be paid 1 million kyats in compensation
