Junta’s indiscriminate artillery attacks frighten villagers and plantation workers
June 20, 2025
HURFOM: Since June 17th, 2025, the R Yu Taung based 343rd Light Infantry Battalion has been targeting R Yu Taung village and nearby areas in Ye Township, Mon State with indiscriminate artillery attacks. There have been no active armed clashes in the area. The junta has justified their actions by claiming that members of the People’s Defense Force were active around the village.
Artillery shells randomly exploded in nearby rubber plantations, leaving villagers and plantation workers worried about their safety and security.

“We heard two sounds of gunfire at noon on June 17th. About 8 pm at night, the army launched an artillery attack on the plantations outside the village. It was just an indiscriminate attack. We’re worrying that artillery shells will drop and explode in our plantation,” said a local villager.
Ever since the attempted coup began in February 2021, the junta established two military security gates in R Yu Taung villages. One is staffed by troops from the 343rd LIB while another one is controlled by a local militia group. Both gates have banned villagers and plantation workers from passing through between 6 pm and 6 am.
“Depending on the situation, sometimes, the army forces plantation workers to go back home early and sometimes, they don’t allow them to go to their workplace,” said a plantation owner.
On June 8th, 2025, the security gate operated by the 343rd LIB was attacked by the “Ye Balue” group – a local revolutionary armed force.
Frequent movement restriction directives issued by the junta create livelihood problems for villagers and plantation workers who are unable to harvest durians, mangosteens or plant betel nut crops.
