Entire population of Pine Yat village flees their community

HURFOM: Pine Yat village is located on the border of Kyikemayaw Township, Mon State and Kaw Ka Rate Township, Karen State. It has 220 houses and the village population is approximately 500 residents.
On June 9th, 2025, the military junta launched a brutal air assault on a self-reliant school. Five villagers including schoolchildren and teachers were killed and nearly 30 other residents were injured during the air assault.
The entire population fled soon after the attack. Displaced villagers took shelter in nearby forests and mountains, plantations and relatives’ houses.
“The entire population of Pine Yat village fled their homes, but residents in nearby villages didn’t leave their residence,” said a Pine Yat villager.
There have been intense battles between the military junta and the Karen National Liberation Army and its allies in Kaw Ka Rate Township. Local resistance groups have been active around in Kyikemayaw Township, Mon State. Residents are worried about possible air assaults by the junta due to ongoing military tensions.
