HURFOM: Since March 2025, the police have been arresting tricycle operators, extorting money from the owners, or imposing prison terms on them.
The police demanded 500,000 or 600,000 MMK to facilitate the return of the tricycles they seized. The owners who could not pay the money were detained in custody or sometimes jailed.
“One of my uncles was arrested and we had to bribe the police to have him released. We also had to pay as much as 600,000 MMK to get back his tricycle,” said a Thaton resident.
Locals reported that the owners who failed to pay the money were jailed for at least three months.
“If you want to get the arrested owners released, you have to bribe the police. But if you have no money to pay for the tricycle, the owner will be jailed for three months,” said a local source.
Arresting tricycle operators has also been happening in Kyike Hto, Bilin and Paung Township, Mon State.
