Southern Ye telecommunications cut off for three months

HURFOM: The dominant telecommunications networks in Southern Ye Township, Mon State are MPT and MyTel however, since December, 2024, both providers have not been able to provide any signal to Ma Gyi and Kyone Nyell villages located in the township.
“We had telecommunication cut off due to bad weather before but would get limited signal. Now, we’ve totally lost the signal and it has been like that for more than three months. There is no signal at all,” said a resident from Southern Ye.
Villagers are unable to contact family members via the network.
Some nearby villages get limited access to the MPT and the MyTel signal but not in the village proper.
“There is no signal in the village but we can make a phone call if we go outside the village. The connection is better at night. If we have an important need to make a phone call, we worry about going out at night in this situation,” said a Kyone Nyell resident.
According to a report by Access Now, in 2024, Burma experienced more than 85 telecommunication outages compared to other countries, and it has the worst telecommunication blackouts in the world.
