Mon State electricity blackout during matriculation exams, despite promises from Chief Minister

March 20, 2025

HURFOM: From March 17th to 22nd, 2025 is the time of the matriculation exams for the 2024-25 academic year, and the Mon State Chief Minister promised there would be no electricity cut offs during exam time.

Despites the promise, both urban and rural areas across Mon State have been facing regular electricity cut offs during the exam time.

In our village, we received electricity for only one hour in two days. The students aren’t okay with their studies. They have to do their studies at their school at night and parents have to provide a guard,” said one parent from Mudon Township.

All townships that use electricity provided by the military junta have been facing blackout during the exam time.  Even Ye Township, which buys electricity from the private companies, has been facing blackouts due to gasoline shortages.

Some villages have been organizing “night study” at schools and the students’ parents have to pay for the gasoline to run the generators.

We haven’t gotten electricity regularly before but during the exam time, we should get electricity regularly. But now, we don’t even know when we will get electricity,” said a Mawlamyine resident.

The number of students who sit for the matriculation exam has declined since the military coup in 2021. There were more than 10,000 matriculation students in the 2021-21 academic year; more than 5,000 matriculation students in 2023-24 academic year and more than 9,000 matriculation students in 2024-25 academic year.
