Man steps on landmine in Thanbyuzayat and loses leg

HURFOM: On March 7th, 2025, 43-year-old Ko Nandar Tun from Well Kha Me village, Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State stepped on a landmine while cleaning at his plantation.

The explosion severed his left ankle and landmine debris injured his right leg, left arm and lower jaw.

His plantation is located on the Well Kha Me Hill. He went to his plantation by motorbike and after halfway, he had to continue on foot. Upon reaching the plantation, which was a 30-minute walk, he stepped on a landmine,” said a source close to his family.

Ko Nandar Tun received treatment at the Thanbyuzayat Hospital; however, he was later transferred to the Mawlamyine General Hospital. It was necessary to amputate one leg and a plate was inserted into his remaining leg.

According to locals, the 62nd battalion based in Paung Sein village is active around plantations near Well Kha Me and Paw Taw Mu villages and the landmine may have been planted by them.

There have been frequent landmine explosions and people have suffered injuries at the plantation and on the way to the plantation in Thanbyuzayat Township. This time, the injuries are very serious. Now, we’re afraid of going to the plantation. We are always worried about stepping on landmines,” said one plantation worker.

There have been persistent military tensions along the Thanbyuzayat – Ye Highway Road and landmine explosions are frequently taking place in Well Kha Me, Ah Twin Sakan Gyi, Yell Ta Gon and Aye Thar Yar villages, Thanbyuzayat Township.
