More undocumented Burmese citizens arrested due to consequences of crack down on “call-scam gangs”

HURFOM: Since January 5th, 2025, the Thai Border Guard Force has tightened security along the Thai – Burma border in order to crack down on “call-scam gangs” operating in the area.
As a consequence, many undocumented Burmese citizens who tried to cross the border are being arrested every day.
In January, 2025, 300 undocumented Burmese citizens who tried to enter Thailand were arrested by the Thai Border Guard Force at Sangkhlaburi region, Kanchanaburi District.
In February, 2025, another 346 undocumented Burmese citizens who did manage to cross the Thai – Burma border were arrested by Thai authorities.

“The Thai authorities are conducting arrests every day. They have been tightening security everywhere on the border. The undocumented Burmese citizens trust the brokers and pay them a huge amount of money to enter Thailand. I’m a driver in this area and know the truth. I have to transport more than 100 undocumented Burmese citizens every day. But I’ve dropped them at Three Pagoda Pass,” said a driver of the Mawlamyine – Three Pagoda Pass Road.

From January to October, 2024, 5,449 undocumented Burmese citizens who tried to cross the Thai – Burma border were arrested by the Thai Border Guard Force.
