Khaw Zar residents limited to two hours/day of electrical service: Bill still rises to 3.400 MMK per kWh

HURFOM: In February, 2025, residents from Khaw Zar Town, Ye Township, Mon State received electricity for only two hours a day, but their bills increased to 3,400 MMK per kWh

The electricity company collected 3,050 MMK per kWh in January, 2025.  The company announced they would collect 3,400 MMK per kWh starting February, 2025 due to the high price of gasoline.

Last month, we had to pay about 3,000 MMK per kWh. But this month, the company increased the fee to 3,400 MMK and they justified the price hike to the cost of gasoline. We’ve only received electricity for two hours a day and it isn’t every day,” said a local resident.

A private company “Ngwe San Dar Company” has been distributing electricity in Khaw Zar Town. Before February 1, 2021, when the military attempted their coup, residents received electricity from 4 am to 6 am and from 6 pm to 10 pm but now, they will only get electricity from 6 pm to 8 pm.

Before, we had to pay for at least five kWh even if we didn’t use the limit. It’s okay at that time but now, with the rate of 3,400 MMK per kWh, we can’t pay the fee,” said a Khaw Zar resident.

The company cut off electricity during school exams.  Approximately 300 residents signed a petition protesting the situation and delivered it to the Ye Township Electricity Distribution Committee.

The company said if we didn’t want to use their electricity, they would come and remove their meter box. But the entire village has to rely on their electricity. I don’t know what will happen next,” said a resident.
