Local authority ignores rise of theft and robbery cases in Ye

December 27, 2024

HURFOM: In 2024, theft and robbery cases were on the rise in wards in Ye Town, Ye Township, Mon State but an appropriate response from the local authority and the police forces was lacking.

On December 19th, 2024, a house in Thiri Nadar Ward, Ye Town was burgled.  A motorbike, two million in cash, a water pump, wire cable, an iron door and other valuable things were stolen.

The owner filed a report with the local police but there has been no effective response from them.

We called the police for help. They said they would come but they didn’t actually. Even if they arrested the thief, he would be released within one or two days. They didn’t detain thieves for a long time. Maybe, they can’t feed them when in custody,” said a Ye resident.

Since February 1, 2021, the date the attempted coup began, rule of law has been weak and cases of theft and robbery began to rise.

In 2023, local residents in one community formed a “self-reliant night patrol group” with about 100 people.  The group’s efforts served to slow thefts in Lamine Town, Ye Township. The group arrested as many as 15 thieves within the first month.

The military junta has imposed both martial law and a 8 pm to 6 am curfew in Ye Township.  Despite these measures more and more thefts occur in Ye Town.
