Number of displaced persons reaches nearly 70,000 in Tenasserim

HURFOM: Within 11 months, from January to November, 2024, the number of displaced persons in Tenasserim Division has reached 68,330, according to a report by the FE5 Tanintharyi, a local research organization.
This year, there have been frequents armed clashes between the military junta and the local armed resistance groups and the frequent and constant armed conflicts have forced more and more residents to flee their home.
“There have been frequent and constant clashes in Yebyu and Long Lone. The number of armed clashes has risen significantly,” said a villager.
As there has been no special safe zone or camp for the displaced villagers, residents who have to flee home have to hide themselves in nearby mountain, forest and plantations.
“There has been no special safe zone for the villagers who run away from armed clashes. They have faced lots of challenges. They have to hide themselves in rubber plantations and nearby villages,” said a resident.
In November, 2024, the military junta had launched operation in villages in Tenasserim region for many days and frequently battled with the local armed groups. Moreover, the junta has burnt down and destroyed houses and arrested and killed villagers resulting in a significant rise of displaced persons.
