HURFOM: On December 12th, 2024, the Director of the Township General Administration Department met with residents from six wards in Kyarinnseikyi Town, Kaw Ka Rate District, Karen State and demanded that each ward must send at least ten conscripts.
“After the meeting, the junta arbitrarily arrested young men in the wards. At least three young men from Ward #1 were arrested and taken by the military truck,” said a local resident who prefers to stay anonymous.
The junta has issued a curfew that begins at 6 pm in Kyarinnseikyi and arbitrarily arrested young men who are going out at night.
Also, in villages in Karen State, the junta has pressured village Administrators to collect a conscript per village or to pay three million MMK instead.
If a village fails to send a conscript or pay the money, the junta has threatened that they will raid the village and conduct arbitrary arrest to collect conscripts.
According to a report by the Burma Affairs and Crisis Study (BACS), more than 21,000 civilians have been forcibly conscripted for five batches of military training.
