HURFOM: Since December 4th, 2024, the military junta has been conducting more arrests of owners of unlicensed vehicles at the Thadar Phyu (White Bridge) security gate, Ye Township, Mon State. According to local sources, after arresting the owners, they are then being extorted by the military.
Junta’s security forces are also checking the ID cards of travelers and those who fail to show their documents face monetary fines or seizure of vehicles.
“If you fail to show your ID card, you’ll be fined 30,000 MMK. If you don’t have a vehicle license, you have to pay from 50,000 to 100,000 MMK. If you can’t pay, your vehicle will be seized. You must pay to get your vehicle back,” said a Ye resident.
The military junta has stopped issuing new vehicle licenses since the attempted coup began on February 1st, 2021. Vehicle owners are only granted extensions on their driver and vehicle licenses.
“Even vehicles with official licenses dare not to go out. The extortion demands for some unlicensed vehicles are more than ten million MMK. But they just have temporary number plates,” said a local source.
Local resistance forces have been attacking the Thadar Phy security gate often and in response, the military junta has tightened their security, and is conducting strict checks on travelers and residents.
