HURFOM: Since December 1st, 2024, the military junta has been extorting money from households in various wards in Ye Town, Mon State. Households have had to pay 10,000 MMK.
The ward Administrators delivered invitation letters entitled “to have a discussion” to homes, and then extorted 10,000 MMK from residents who had come to their meeting.
“They’ve come one street a day and delivered invitation letters to join their meeting. Those who joined the meeting had to pay 10,000 MMK and those who couldn’t join the meeting had to send the same amount with a person,” said one Ye resident.
The junta claimed two conscripts per ward in Ye must be sent to the military training and the local residents fear the military junta would conduct a forceful arrest to get conscripts.
“If we don’t pay the money, we are worried that they’ll forcefully arrest our family members as conscripts,” said a local resident.
In some wards, the administrators have also extorted money from the local business owners.
“When the administrators said this amount of money was needed to support the conscripts, the business owners and the community leaders in the wards collected money secretly and sent the money to them,” said a local source.
According to local sources, some wards in Ye Town have been extorted for as many as three times.
