Junta sentences social worker to 10-year imprisonment in Kyike Hto

HURFOM: On November 27^th, 2024, the military junta has sentenced U Mya Aung, a social worker from “Kaw San Nine” social and rescue team, from Kaw San Nile Ward, Kyike Town, Mon State to a 10-year imprisonment after accusing him of having connection with the People’s Defense Force.

“U Mya Aung was just doing social work. Having connection with the PDF is just a misconception made by the junta. The court decision was made by that misconception,” said a resident from Kaw San Nine Ward.

On June 13^th, 2024, the junta used excessive force to arrest members of Kaw San Nine social and rescue team U Mya Aung, his daughter Ma Su Myat Su Yadanar Way, coworkers U Chan Thar Aung, and U Soe Hline at their houses. The junta has filed charges under the Anti-Terrorist Act sections #50(J), 52(A) and #54.

“Soon after the court decision, U Mya Aung was moved to the Thaton Prison. The remaining three social workers have been detained at the Kyaik Hto Police Station and are going to court,” said a local source.

It is the first time that a member of a social and rescue team has been sentenced under the Anti-Terrorist Act in Mon State since February 1, 2021.

On September 20^th, 2024, the junta arrested five social workers from Thanbyuzayat Township at their office. Sources familiar with the matter said, one worker was killed in the military interrogation camp, but HURFOM has been unable to confirm this statement.
