Junta burns down and destroys 60 houses in Maung Mell Shaung

HURFOM: Within three months, from late July to the end of October, 2024, the military junta burnt down and destroyed more than 60 houses in Maung Mell Shaung village, Dawei Township, Tenasserim Division.

According to the data collected by HURFOM, more than 30 houses were burnt down and destroyed from July 27th to late August, 2024, and another 30 houses were burnt down and destroyed on September 30th, 2024.

On October 31st, five houses near the Dawei Technology University in Maung Mell Shaung village tract were destroyed and also burnt down.

It’s six times already that the junta burnt down and destroyed houses. More than 60 houses were destroyed. All of them were good houses. The fires stopped at 2 pm,” said a displaced villager who took shelter at a betel nut plantation.

There has been an intense battle between the junta and the local resistance forces near Maung Mell Shaung village, and after every battle the junta intentionally burnt down residential houses.

We’re from Maung Mell Shaung village but we dare not go back to our village to check the condition of our houses as we’re afraid of being arrested or shot,” said one displaced resident.

The military junta attacked Maung Mell Shaung village beginning in early July, 2024 forcing more than 1,000 households to flee their homes. Those displaced are unable to return to their homes as of today.

We’ve fled from our house for more than three months. Now, we’re staying on a farm. We don’t know when we can go back to our village,” said a displaced villager.
