HURFOM: On September 20th, 2024, a junta’s regiment invaded Maung Mell Shaung village, Dawei Township, Tenasserim Division and battled with the local People’s Defense Force.

Three days after the battle, the regiment burnt down 30 houses, a displaced villager told HURFOM.

The smoke came out at noon on September 20th. Three houses nearby the village clinic were burnt down. There was a battle again on September 22nd and the regiment burnt down houses again on the next day,” said a local woman.

The regiment remains in the village and continues burning down residential houses.

The smoke is still coming out. Lots of houses were burnt down this time. After the battle, they don’t chase after the PDF, but burn down the villagers’ houses,” said a displaced woman.,

The local villagers said the junta suffered many casualties in the battle, and in retaliation the regiment burned down the houses.

The fire started in the morning of September 23 was still burning at noon. Looking at the amount of smoke, I think the loss of houses is much more than the previous time,” said a local source.

On July 24, 2024, a junta’s regiment stationed themselves in Maung Mell Shaung village for more than a month, forcing 1,000 residents to flee. The displaced villagers remain unable to return home as of today.

The junta’s troops robbed and destroyed empty houses and then burnt them down. Nearly the entire village has been destroyed,” said one resident from Maung Mell Shaung.
