HURFOM: Since the third week of August, 2024, battles have been breaking out along the Thanbyuzayat-Three Pagoda Pass Road in Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State. The intensity of the fighting forced thousands of residents from nearly ten villages alongside the road to flee their homes.
“The battle is getting intense and the houses are destroyed. The monasteries are damaged. So both the villagers and the monks had to run away. All villagers from ten villages had to flee their homes,” said a local man.
The aggressive military operation has forced approximately 5,000 residents from Ye Ta Gon, Zee Hna Pin, Lot Shan, Ta Nyin, Than Pa Yar, Well Ga Nine and nearby villages in Thanbyuzayat Township to flee.
“We had to send the monks to (the monasteries in) Thanbyuzayat. The villagers took shelter at relatives’ houses. Some houses and monasteries were damaged by the artillery attacks. I don’t know if there are casualties or not,” said a displaced person from Ye Ta Gon village.
Villagers reported that the 315th artillery regiment based in Well Kali, Thanbyuzayat Township launched artillery attacks while the Mawlamyine based Southeast Military Command launched air assaults on residential villages.
