Thanbyuzayat, Mon State – July 19, 2024
HURFOM: On July 19, 2024, Nai Tun, a 40-year-old local man from Pa Nga village, Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State, stepped on a landmine while heading to his rubber plantation in Ah Twin Sakhan Gyi village. The explosion destroyed the rear part of his motorbike, although he fortunately did not sustain serious injuries.
“A few days prior, there was an armed clash in the area. He turned his motorbike into the plantation, and the rear wheel hit a landmine. He and his motorbike were blown away in different directions. He didn’t sustain serious injuries but has aches all over his body,” reported a relative of the victim.
The presence of both the military junta and revolutionary forces around Ah Twin Sakhan Gyi village has led to frequent armed clashes. The 315th artillery regiment often launches indiscriminate artillery attacks, causing injuries and fatalities among local villagers and damaging residential houses.
The threat of landmines and the ongoing armed conflicts in Mon State severely impact the rights and lives of civilians in HURFOM’s targeted documentation areas. Landmines, often laid during military operations, pose a persistent danger to civilians, limiting their freedom of movement and access to essential livelihoods, such as farming and rubber plantations. These hidden hazards not only cause physical harm but also instill a pervasive fear among the local population, disrupting daily life and economic activities.
Additionally, the frequent armed clashes between the military junta and resistance forces exacerbate the insecurity faced by civilians. Indiscriminate artillery attacks by junta forces, such as those by the No. 315 artillery regiment of Junta, lead to significant destruction of property, loss of life, and injuries among innocent villagers. These actions constitute severe human rights violations and create a humanitarian crisis, necessitating urgent international attention and intervention to protect and uphold the rights of the affected communities.
