HURFOM: On July 20, 2024, the military junta launched a reckless artillery attack on Nyaung Zin village, Tha Yet Chaung Township, Tanintharyi Region, resulting in the death of a civilian.

The victim, U Myo Lwin, was a 60-year-old resident of the northern part of Nyaung Zin village. He was grazing his cattle on a farm behind his house when artillery fire struck, hitting him in the abdomen and killing him instantly.

“There were two or three artillery attacks. U Myo Lwin was hit while grazing his cattle. The shrapnel opened his abdomen, and he died on the spot,” reported a villager from Nyaung Zin.

Since July 18, approximately 60 junta troops have been stationed in the village’s monastery and school. “The military has taken over the school and monastery. Around noon on July 21, they began searching houses in the northern part of the village,” said another local resident.

The junta’s military operations in Tha Yet Chaung Township began on July 13, forcing thousands of residents from five villages to flee their homes. This incident is part of a broader pattern of escalating violence and human rights abuses in the region.

According to the recent HURFOM’s reports, the military junta has been intensifying its operations in the region, leading to significant civilian displacement, arbitrary arrests, and destruction of property. The ongoing conflict has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence. (***Note – Please hide the victim’s face)
