Only twenty displaced villagers return to Dhammasa village

July 5, 2024

HURFOM: Since the last week of April, 2024, the military junta has announced that displaced persons from Dhammasa village, Kyikemayaw Township, Mon State can return home because the region is now stable and peaceful.

The junta artillery attack destroyed more than 400 houses in Dhammasa village and forced about 1,500 residents to flee their homes. However, only 20 villagers have returned home, according to the local source.

The armed clashes (are still happening) and the houses were burnt to ash. Most displaced persons have fled abroad. Those who don’t have much money constructed a hut on their farmland and stayed there. Some villagers moved to other cities where their children are attending school,” said a Kyikemayaw resident.

The junta has threatened the villagers living in huts on farmland to return and live in the village.

The junta forces also threaten displaced villagers who returned home. They regularly conduct military activities when it is not raining. So it isn’t good to go back. The Kyune Yaw residents have heard the sound of artillery weapons every day,” said a displaced person.

The Mon State government, which is controlled by the junta, said they would provide monetary support in May, 2024 but residents have received nothing as of today.

We’ve heard the government would pay 30 million MMK. But it hasn’t reached us yet. As of today, only Mon organizations have supported us,” said a displaced villager.

Currently, the military junta is mobilizing in the Pyar Taung area, Kyikemayaw Township forcing the local residents to flee home and take shelter in the nearby monastery.
