For social workers charged under Anti-Terrorist act in Kyike Hto

HURFOM: On June 27th, 2024, the military junta charged four social workers with the “Kaw Sa Nine Society Organization ” from Kaw Sa Nine Ward, Kyike Hto Town, Mon State using the Anti-Terrorist Act. 

According to sources close to the families, on June 13th, U Mya Aung, his daughter Ma Su Myat Su Yadanar Way, and coworkers U Chan Thar Aung, and U Soe Hline, were arrested by the junta at their home. The junta interrogated them at the 44th Battalion Command for two weeks and then laid charges.

The court session started yesterday (June 27). They aren’t allowed to meet with their family members. The court allowed them to hold them on remand, and they were taken away immediately. No one knows their whereabouts,” said a source close to the family members.

The junta has charged them using section 50(j), 52(a) and 54 of Anti-
Terrorist Act. Punishment can be lifetime imprisonment or the death penalty.

It is the first time that social workers have been charged under the Act in Mon State.  The junta has accused them of supporting the People’s Defense Forces, sharing information and cooperating in killing military informants.
