Exam pass rate of Mon national school students drops significantly

HURFOM: The matriculation exam results for the 2023-24 academic year were released on June 11th, 2024 and only ten students from the three Mon national high schools passed the exam this year. The three schools operate under the Mon National Education Committee.

Two students from “Nyi Sar” Mon national high school in Ye Chaung Phyar region which is controlled by the New Mon State Party, and six students from “Weng Ha Poe” Mon national high school in Kyarinnseikyi Township, Karen State along with two students from “Ann Din” Mon national high school in Ye Township made up the group of ten students.

The exam pass rate has dropped not only in Mon national schools. Ye and Myawaddy were described as “special zones” and exam questions are more difficult than other townships. Some high schools in Ye Township have 0% exam pass rate,” said a schoolteacher from a Mon national high school.

In the 2022-23 academic year, 94 students from the Mon national high schools took the matriculation exam and 42 passed. However, only one-fourth passed this year.

Only two out of 33 students from “Ann Din” Mon national high school and six out of 27 students from “Weng Ha Poe” Mon national high school passed the exam. HURFOM was unable to collect data related to students in “Nyi Sar” Mon national high school.

In the entire Mon State, 3,407 out of 5,767 high school students passed their matriculation exam for the 2023-24 academic year.
