HURFOM: On May 11th, 2024, the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and its allies detonated a bomb destroying the Kyone Ate Bridge near Shwe Yaung Pya village, Bilin Township, Mon State. The destruction of the bridge has stranded thousands of travelers, according to local emergency and rescue teams.

At the moment, trucks, express buses and family cars are using an alternative route to go between Shwe Yaung Pya and Moe Kaung villages but the road is very narrow and hundreds of vehicles are getting stuck on this roadway.

All cars are stuck as the road is very narrow. No car can move out. There have been more than 500 cars. Everyone is in trouble as there is no restaurant here. What was normally a 20-minute drive now cost us two days,” said an official from a local rescue team.

People from Mon, Karen and Tenasserim areas of Southern Burma relied on the Kyone Ate Bridge and the Mawlamyine – Yangon Highway Road for transportation of goods.

We’re stuck here for more than a day. There is no water and no food here. Travelers have to help each other. In addition, there has been a constant artillery attack and everyone has to worry,” said one stranded traveler.

On May 12th, 2024, the junta targeted Shwe Yaung Pya and Moe Kaung villages with artillery attacks that killed two men and damaged a vehicle.
