Mon State faces electricity and water shortage
May 13, 2024
HURFOM: Local villagers reported to HURFOM that since March, 2024, Mon State has been experiencing electricity shortages and villages in townships across the State have also been experiencing water shortages.
The military junta announced in 2023 that electricity would be delivered six hours a day in Mon State but in reality, electricity is only available for two hours a day.
“The electricity came back at 10 pm and turned off at 12 pm. It’s scorching hot. Even though we have electricity for two hours a day, the electricity bill didn’t go down. We still have to pay more,” said a Mawlamyine resident.
The Ministry of Electrical Power of the junta announced on April 21st, 2024 that Mon State and Yangon, Irrawaddy and Pegu Divisions would experience more electricity shortages.
“The price of gasoline has risen so sharply that some small and medium enterprises have to stop their operations,” said a resident from Thanbyuzayat Town.
Mawlamyine, Chaung Zone, Paung, Kyikemayaw and Bilin Townships have all faced water shortages since the last week of April, 2024.
“We have had a water shortage since March. The weather is blistering. People are suffering a lot this year,” said a resident from Kyikemayaw Township.
Before the attempted coup, local emergency and rescue teams donated and distributed water to villagers in need but now, there are nearly no “water donation” groups due to high gasoline prices and junta’s restriction on non-profit organizations.
