Junta plans to extort villagers to feed families of those in compulsory military service
March 19, 2024
HURFOM: The military junta said the particular villages are responsible to feed the family members of the villagers who are selected to join compulsory military service and the village/ ward administration authorities are planning to extort money from the villagers.
“In our areas, each village tract must give two villagers (to join military service). If a married person is selected, the village must feed his family members. So the village administration team has planned to collect 2,000 or 3,000 MMK per household,” said a member of the village administration department in Southern Ye Township.
The list of villagers selected for compulsory military service must be reported to the Mon State government on March 20, 2024 and the particular villages have to feed their family members when they are in military training.
“The military training will last for six months. The village must feed their families during the six months. After the training, they will get a salary. The village has to take care of the families before the end of the training,” said the member.
The village/ ward administration department has decided to support each family of villagers in compulsory military service with 500,000 MMK per month and the amount can be changed based on the size of the family.
The New Mon State Party (AD – Anti Military Dictatorship) and the Ye Ba Lue Group who are revolutionary forces active in Southern Ye Township released statements that they would severely punish village or ward administrators who force villagers into military service.
