Young man steps on landmine – loses leg

HURFOM: On February 18th, 2024, a 28-year-old man from War Dat Kwin village, Kyike Hto Township, Mon State stepped on a landmine and lost one of his legs.

Ko Yan Pine Soe went into the forest near his village to collect grass for making brooms. He stepped on a landmine and lost his right leg. Landmine debris also penetrated his entire body.

His family has made a livelihood from selling grass for making brooms. They were always going there before. I’ve learnt that his right leg was amputated,” said a War Dat Kwin resident.

Ko Yan Pine Soe was admitted to the Kyike Hto General Hospital as an emergency patient.

The military junta has a presence at both War Dat Kwin and Kyauk Mile Kwin.  Villagers believe they planted the landmine.  

On December 28, 2023, a couple from In Ka Boe village, Kyike Hto Township stepped on a landmine and the 40-year-old husband died.

Landmine explosions happen very frequently in Kyike Hto Township causing villagers to be afraid of going to their plantations or workplaces.
