Mon National Day Celebrations to be minimized due to security concerns

February 13, 2024

HURFOM: The 77th Mon National Day celebration scheduled for February 25th, 2024 will be minimized due to political unrest and local security conditions, according to the Organization Committee of Mon National Day (Central).

For the past three years, the celebration has been minimized due to COVID-19 and the military coup. This year, the Organization Committee of Mon National Day (Central) released a statement on January 18th urging the Mon people to celebrate the Mon National Day in accordance with the local security conditions.

We’ve requested the New Mon State Party to provide security to those who will join the celebration of the Mon National Day and to make them have no difficulty. Local residents will fully cooperate in providing security to the people,” said Dr Aung Naing Oo, the Chair of the Organization Committee of Mon National Day (Central).

The Mon people in Kaw Ka Rate Township, Karen State and Ye and Thanbyuzayat Townships, Mon State face many challenges this year as there are intense armed clashes in their areas.

Armed clashes have broken out across the country. Inflation is also high during this year. We have to struggle with the cost for the ceremony. So, we’ll just celebrate as best we can,” continued Dr Aung Naing Oo.

The 77th Mon National Day (Central) will be celebrated in Ka Mar Mo village, Chaung Zone Township, Mon State on February 25th, 2024.
