Junta threatens villagers to join local militia groups in Thaton District

HURFOM: According to multiple sources, the military junta has threatened and pressured villagers to form and join local militia groups in Kyike Hto, Bilin, Thaton and Paung Townships, Thaton District, Mon State.
Some leaders of local militia groups and “Pyu Saw Htee” pro-military groups in Thaton Township have threatened villagers that they must serve as members of local militia groups in a ratio per village or ward.
“The leader of “Pyu” said 15 men per village must be recruited as members of militia groups. If no one wants to join the militia groups, they must be selected by “lottery”,” said a villager who wants to stay anonymous.
Currently, village Administrators and “Pyu Saw Htee” leaders from Sa Khan Gyi, Ah Nan Pin, Nyaung Chaung, War Coke and InWine villages of Thaton Township have forcefully selected 15 men per village to serve as members of local militia groups.
Also in Tone Eain Zu village, the village Administrator has threatened villagers in the same way, failure to do so will result in a financial penalty of three million MMK per person.
During the three years of the attempted coup, the military junta has lost many troops and they have been struggling with recruiting new soldiers. In order to reinforce their forces, the military junta threatens villagers to serve as members of local militia groups.
