Three internally displaced persons shot: Two die in Kaw Ka Rate

HURFOM: The military tension in Kaw Ka Rate Town, Karen State has been on-going for the last 40 days. On January 9th, 2024, the military junta battled with the joint forces of the Karen National Liberation Army and the People’s Defense Forces in downtown Kaw Ka Rate.

Three internally displaced persons (IDP) who were from Ward #6, had returned to their homes to collect household items when they were shot. Two died, while the third sustained an injury.

“The battle took place again in downtown on January 9th. There has been shooting of both heavy and small weapons. Three previously displaced persons returned to collect materials when they were shot. Two of them died. We think that the deceased persons were killed by a sniper,” said a Kaw Ka Rate resident.

The junta has used both artillery and drone attacks destroying at least six houses in the town.

“My house was hit by an artillery weapon and burnt down. Now, I have no home to return to. It’s also difficult to get food here. I’m speechless,” said one displaced person from Kaw Ka Rate.

On January 10th, a man from Ward #6 and a cow were killed by the junta’s artillery attack.

Since the beginning of December, 2023, nearly 100 houses in Kaw Ka Rate have been burnt down and many houses burgled.
