Since December 1st, 2023, there has been an ongoing battle between the military junta and the joint forces of the Karen National Liberation Army in Kaw Ka Rate Town, Karen State. More than 30,000 residents fled their homes and roughly 100 houses were damaged.

More than 15,000 residents from seven wards and an estimated 17,000 villagers from 24 surrounding villages fled due to the battle, reported social workers, who have been providing support to those displaced.

Moreover, about 100 houses were burnt down and at least 20 civilians were killed.

The Burmese soldiers are stationed at high-rise (tall) buildings and fighting back. The battle between two sides is still intense,” said one resident.

People have fled to Hpa-An, Eain Du, Kyauk Ka Lat, Thar Ma Nya, Mawlamyine and nearby villages and plantations for their safety.

The prolonged battle has created a shortage of food and goods and commodity prices have risen sharply. The junta also cut off the telecommunication network in the area.
