Women targeted by robbers in Ye: Martial law has no impact & police fail to provide remedy

HURFOM: The military junta imposed martial law and a curfew in Ye Township, Mon State but robberies of mobile phones, purses and wallets, jewelry and motorbikes continue to occur frequently.
According to the collected data, women are being targeted in these robbery cases.
On August 30, 2023, two male motorbike riders robbed a purse from a woman nearby “Nay Myo Yar Zar” clinic on West Shwe San Daw Street, Ye Town. On September 1, 2023, two young male motorbike riders attacked a woman and robbed her of more than 400,000 MMK and a mobile phone. The woman had just withdrawn her money from the “Wave Money” agency in Yan Gyi Aung Street, Ye Town.
On September 19, two young men kicked the motorbike ridden by a woman and robbed her near the “San Myat Tun” motel on Ye – Ah Sin Road in Aung Mingalar Ward, Ye Town. She was on her way to a microfinance company to pay her loan.
On October 8, a woman borrowed a million MMK from her relatives in Ye Town. She was robbed on her way back to the village. Three men pointed a knife at her and robbed her of the money near the Ka Doe monastery.
“Now robbers are targeting women. In two recent cases, women were also attacked and their motorbikes were knocked down. On October 8, a woman was robbed at knifepoint,” said a Ye resident.
Theft, burglary and robbery cases are occurring frequently in Ye Township. Although all victims filed a police report there has been no response or arrests.
“Lots of robberies are happening in Ye Township. It’s happening every day,” said a man from Kaw Hline village, Ye Township.
