Military junta destroys roads in Kaw Ka Rate Township: Leaves villagers without connecting transportation at harvest time

May 20, 2023

HURFOM: Since May 13, 2023, the Burmese military has been destroying concrete or asphalt roads connecting villages in Kaw Ka Rate Township, Karen State.

They also destroyed the road near the Taung Kyar Inn Bridge. The Vice Commander of the 343rd Light Infantry Battalion supervised the destruction. They destroyed roads with a backhoe. Now about 30 villages have lost connection with Kaw Ka Rate Town. All villagers are in trouble,” said a Kaw Ka Rate resident.

On May 13, the military also destroyed roadways connecting  Southern Kaw Ka Rate and on May 14, they destroyed Kaw Ka Rate – Kyaik Done Road and Ka Mile Gone Road. Then, they destroyed an asphalt road nearby Taung Kyar Inn Bridge on May 17.

Now is the time to harvest durians. We can’t transport fruits from our plantation and we can’t sell fruits and vegetables farmed in our villages also. We can do nothing. We have to use the Kyarinnseikyi route to go to Mawlamyine and it’s very far away. Everyone is in trouble with transportation,” said a fruit seller from Kaw Ka Rate Town.

After destroying roads, the military junta indiscriminately launched artillery attacks targeting villages alongside the Hong Tha Yaw River.

They are afraid that the revolutionary forces will enter the town (and attack them) so they’ve destroyed the roads,” said a Kaw Ka Rate resident.
