20 rubber plantations set on fire in Lamine: No suspects

February 1, 2023

HURFOM: At approximately 10:00 am on January 29, 2023, at least 20 rubber plantations near Lamine Town, Ye Township, in Mon State were set on fire by unknown person(s).

No one knows what the motive was,  but a young social worker commented the incident might be related to political issues.

That’s a dirty strategy of the politicians. They  want to create unrest in otherwise peaceful Mon villages. We haven’t caught the person so we can’t accuse them by names. Those who set the fires can’t be ordinary villagers. They might be related to the army/armed organizations, said a young social worker.

One witness said the person who set the fire wore black clothes and rode a black motorbike.

I had heard rubber plantations were being set on fire at about 10 pm so we went there to stop the fire. The plantation workers said they saw a person in black clothes and a black motorbike stopped nearby the plantations. As he looked suspicious, they tried to approach him. But the fires were spreading at that time. The plantation owners said the same story. We had to stop the fires so we couldn’t catch him, continued the social worker.

The fire was under control by the evening of January 29th, but some plantations were still on fire until the morning of January 30th, 2023.
