Election campaigning faces severe restrictions

HURFOM: Phase one of what many call the ‘junta’s sham election’ will be held on December 28th, 2025. The junta-controlled Union Election Commission has announced that election campaigning can occur between October 28th and December 26th, 2025.
However, according to local sources, even though the campaign period began ten days ago, candidates in Ye Township are unable to campaign.

“The voters’ list has been announced at the administrator’s office. We hear nothing about the election in the villages. No one is interested in the election. We haven’t seen any election campaigning either,” said a Ye resident.
The election commission only allowed the delivery of pamphlets and campaign speeches, but banned organizing mass crowds or marches that also use cars.
“The commission has banned organizing election campaigns by cars due to security concerns. If a candidate wants to hold a campaign event, he/she must file a report to the commission two days in advance. He/she can start the campaign only after the approval,” said a member of a political party who wants to remain anonymous.
The Ye Township of Mon State has been included in the second phase of the ‘sham election’ when voting will be held on January 11th, 2026 in the township.
Mon State has 45 constituencies and 154 candidates from nine political parties and one independent candidate.
