Elderly Woman Injured by Junta Artillery Fire in Kyaikhto Despite No Clashes

October 25, 2025

An elderly woman from Win Kan Village, Kyaikhto Township, Mon State, was injured when artillery shells fired by Junta troops exploded near her home, even though no fighting had taken place in the area, according to local residents.

Around 10 a.m. on October 22, troops from Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) 598, based in Shwegyin Township, Bago Region, launched artillery shells toward Win Kan Village without any provocation or armed clashes.

The explosion injured Daw Met Kee, a 62-year-old woman from Win Kan Village, which is under the administrative control of the Karen National Union (KNU). She sustained injuries to her hip and was treated by local medics.

Just two days earlier, on October 20, Junta forces had also fired artillery shells into Phar Paung Village in Hpa-an Township, also under KNU control, killing three civilians and injuring fifteen others.

Residents say that artillery fire, airstrikes, and bombings by the Junta have become frequent in Kyaikhto Township and surrounding areas, even where no clashes occur. Many believe these attacks are meant to instill fear and pressure communities ahead of the Junta’s planned election.
