Displaced villagers from Pine Yat still unable to return home

July 7, 2025

HURFOM: On June 9th, 2025, the military junta dropped bombs on a self-reliant school in Pine Yat village, Kaw Ka Rate Township, Karen State and nearly 200 villagers had to flee from their homes.

Five villagers were killed and 30 were injured during the June-9 air assault.

After the attack, the junta conducted an aerial patrol and launched repeated artillery attacks on the nearby area.  The displaced villagers have been unable to return to their homes for nearly a month.

The military aircraft fly over the village at least twice a day. We have to be on the alert. We dare not open the school. As there is no permanent displaced camp, villagers have to take shelter at nearby villages or in plantations,” said the Pine Yat Administrator.

After the air assault, only ten households remained in the village, while nearly the entire population fled.

The 83 displaced villagers are renting houses and staying in urban areas where their children are attending school. Some are staying at their relative’s houses,” continued the Administrator.

Pine Yat village is mostly inhabited by Mon and Karen people.
